<h2>How to Get the SLP Salary You Deserve</h2>If you’re in the market for a new SLP position, you can make the most of the offer by negotiating a salary that works for you. Negotiating may sound intimidating, but it’s a breeze when you’re prepared. These tips can help!<ol><li>Do your research. Turn to professional organizations like the American Speech-Language Hearing Association to find out how much SLPs are currently earning.</li></ol><ul><li style="text-indent: 1em;">TIP: Check out ASHA’s <a href="https://www.asha.org/siteassets/surveys/2021-slp-hc-survey-annual-salaries.pdf" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Annual SLP Salary Report</a> and their School Survey on <a href="https://www.asha.org/siteassets/surveys/2020-schools-slp-salaries.pdf" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">SLP Salary and Annual Wages</a>. Also, look up salary info on SLPs at the <a href="https://www.bls.gov/ooh/healthcare/speech-language-pathologists.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.</a> Consider that SLPs who work in schools typically earn less than those outside of schools, but they also have summers off.</li></ul><ol><li>Ask around. There are tactful ways to ask your SLP friends, colleagues and mentors how much they earn. You can even join SLP groups on social media and ask there!</li></ol><ul><li style="text-indent: 1em;">TIP: Join <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/SchoolSLPs/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">School-Based SLPs</a> or <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/363222200514532/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Pediatric Medical SLPs</a> on social media or reach out to the career center at the college you graduated from for input on compensation.</li></ul><ol><li>Set your limits. Work out a personal range you’re willing to accept. Be prepared to stick to your plan, but do take the time to consider perks, benefits, bonuses, etc.</li></ol><ul><li style="text-indent: 1em;">TIP: Figure out your acceptable range on both a salary and hourly basis. That way, you’ll be able to compare apples to oranges. Try to place a value on any quality of life or professional development opportunities too. What are the various factors worth to you (work hours, vacation time, travel/traffic, training, CEUs, support, equipment, technology, etc.)?</li></ul><ol><li>Think about what you want to say in advance. If you’re concerned that you’ll hesitate under pressure, create a written plan.</li></ol><ul><li style="text-indent: 1em;">TIP: Write out a script. Then, have a loved one help you role-play the conversation using several different scenarios. If you say [this]…and the hiring professional says [that]…then…</li></ul><ol><li>Don’t feel guilty or awkward about negotiating. Hiring professionals expect to talk with you about money. Plus, you’ve worked hard to earn your degree, certification, experience and expertise, so have confidence in your qualifications!</li></ol><ul><li style="text-indent: 1em;">TIP: If you have trouble separating yourself from your emotions when negotiating, imagine that you are negotiating for a friend who is an excellent SLP.
